Two killed in head-on collision – Pietermaritzburg

A man and a woman were killed this morning and another seriously injured after a head-on collision between two light motor vehicles on the R617 in Pietermaritzburg.

Shortly before 06h00 this morning, ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene where they found two wrecked light motor vehicle, both lying on the middle of the road. Both vehicles had sustained a large amount of damage in the collision.

On inspection of the first vehicle, paramedics found the man lying inside the vehicle motionless. Assessments showed that the man had already succumbed to his multiple fatal injuries. Unfortunately, nothing more could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on scene.

On inspection of the second vehicle, paramedics found two woman lying inside. Paramedics assessed the driver, believed to have been a number of months pregnant, and found that she too had sustained multiple fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for the patient and she was declared dead.

The female passenger was found to be in a serious condition, having sustained multiple injuries.

ER24 and EMRS paramedics carefully extricated the patient from the vehicle and began their treatment, providing her with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, she was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
