Four men, aged between 29 and 43, are expected to appear in the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with business robberies and ATM bombings, North West police said on Sunday.
This followed their arrest in Protea Glen, Soweto, in Johannesburg, Gauteng, and Mahikeng in North West on Thursday, Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.
The men were arrested following an incident in which a Standard Bank automated teller machine (ATM) was blown open with explosives at a Sasol filling station in Golfview, Mahikeng, on Wednesday, he said.
According to information, several armed men wearing balaclavas fired shots, forcing employees to take cover. They then used explosives to blow open the ATM, as well as a safe inside the shop. They took an undisclosed amount of money and robbed the convenience shop of various goods.
The robbers allegedly fled the scene in two cars – a Nissan X-trail and Volkswagen Golf. No reports of injuries were received at the time of the incident.
The men were arrested with the help of Gauteng crime intelligence. The Hawks were conducting an investigation and it was believed that the men could be linked to other cases within Mahikeng, and others areas, where ATMs had been blown open with explosives, Mokgwabone said.
