Child killed, another child injured in Cape Town crash

A five-year-old boy was killed and another child was injured on Sunday afternoon in a collision between an SUV and a bakkie on Ou Kaapse Weg at Silvermine in Cape Town, Western Cape paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics, along with Metro and other services, arrived on the scene and found both vehicles off to the side of the road. It was found that both vehicles were badly damaged in the collision, ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said.

“On further inspection, paramedics found an unknown man performing CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] on a five-year-old boy.”

Paramedics took over CPR and also provided the child with advanced life support interventions. “Unfortunately, after one hour no vital signs returned and the boy was declared dead on the scene.”

Another boy, also five years old, was assessed and found to have sustained moderate injuries. He was treated and later transported to Red Cross Children’s Hospital for further treatment. The male driver of the SUV and the driver of the bakkie were uninjured.

“It is understood that one man and the two children had been travelling in the SUV when the bakkie swerved into the path of the SUV. Local authorities were on [the] scene for further investigations,” Meiring said.
