Man badly burnt in Pietermaritzburg car fire

A 25-year-old man is in hospital in Pietermaritzburg after being severely burnt when a car caught alight in the early hours of Saturday morning, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said paramedics were called at about 3am to a residential area in Glenwood, Pietermaritzburg, where they found a car well alight outside a residential property.

“Several people, believed to be family members, were trying to extinguish the flames. A relative escorted paramedics into the home where they found the severely burnt man in one of the bedrooms. He sustained multiple burn wounds over his upper body, including his face. At this stage it is unclear what caused the fire and how the man was removed from the vehicle.”

Paramedics initiated advanced life support and rushed him to Edendale Hospital for further medical management, Vermaak said.
