Diepkloof protesters block roads

Protesters have blocked roads with burning tyres in Diepkloof, Soweto.

Traffic near the area is heavily affected.

Residents blocked roads between Baragwanath Road and Diepkloof Zone 5 and Zone 2.
Some of those roads have now been reopened.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters.
“At the moment, no injuries were reported,” Makhubela said.

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesman Wayne Minnaar said the protests began at 5am over housing in the area.

Police said they will continue to monitor the area.
